Horn Island Campouts
Adventure awaits you!
Camping trips to Walter Anderson’s beloved safe haven, Horn Island, hosted by the Wild Horizon Expeditions and in partnership with Ethotera Art Studio.
Our Story
Heather Martin started offering these trips 10 years ago while serving as the Director of Education at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA) in Ocean Springs, MS. Inspired by Walter Anderson's profound connection with Horn Island and the magic he found there, Heather aimed to provide people with firsthand experiences that deepened their understanding of the beloved local artist. Since then, Heather and her husband, Jason, have been offering adventurous individuals the chance to camp, fellowship, and create art on one of the Mississippi Gulf Coast's hidden gems, Horn Island.

These trips have cultivated a dedicated following of "islanders," who eagerly return to camp at least once a year, cherishing the unique experiences the island offers. Each visit is distinct, and once you walk in Anderson's footsteps, explore the dunes, sleep under the stars, and paint the island's flora and fauna, you'll find yourself longing for the refuge of Horn Island.

Heather and Jason strive to provide some modern comforts while you "rough it" in the wilderness. Participants are responsible for bringing their own camping, fishing, and art-making gear.
Starting in 2024, we have expanded the focus of our trips to encompass not only the joys of spending time in nature and celebrating the legacy of Walter Ingles Anderson but also the critical importance of preserving our natural wildernesses through participant education. To support this broader mission, we established Wild Horizon Expeditions as a non-profit organization. This transformation enables us to forge partnerships with like-minded organizations that share our commitment to conservation and education. These collaborations will help us enhance our programs and create new opportunities for meaningful environmental stewardship in the near future.
